Admissions Process

Thank you for your interest in The New High School Project.  The following information and forms should answer some general questions.  We encourage you to call us any time at (831) 393-8004.  We look forward to talking with you, and we’re happy to help you with the application in any way we can.

Admissions Consideration

Consideration for admission to The New High School Project is based on:

  • A formal diagnosis of a specific learning disability such as dyslexia
  • Evidence the student is emotionally available
  • Evidence the student demonstrates average (or higher) cognitive ability
  • The ability of the student to benfit from the school's program
  • The availability of appropriate class groupings

Incoming students are evaluated through analysis of

  • Psycho-educational evaluations
  • Previous school records
  • Parent questionaire
  • Student and parent interviews
  • Informal testing/observation

Admissions Procedure

The New High School Project will begin the admissions process once all materials are received by the Dean of Student Life.

1.  Application Information
  • Completed application form
  • Non-refundable fee made out to Chartwell School - The New High School Project
2.  Medical Information
  • Medical history/summary from family physician
  • Most recent vision and hearing screening
  • Current immunization record (hepatitus B, 2 measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), whooping cough, meningococcal and flu)
3. Assessment Materials
  • Psycho-educational assessment completed by a licensed school psychologist, including a cognitive or intelligence test and current achievement testing in the following areas: reading, spelling, and math computation/concepts.  All assessments must have sub-test scores attached.  Visual and auditory processing should also be included in this report.  This testing can be completed by your local public school, or we can provide you with independent referrals.
  • Academic reference forms from your student’s current language and math teachers, and from one other teacher of your choosing who has taught the student within the last two years.  Please provide teachers with stamped envelopes, addressed to the Admissions Committee of The New High School Project.  Teachers should mail references directly to the school.
  • A copy of your child’s current IEP or 504 Plan
  • The most recent grade reports and comments from the student’s current school
  • If applicable, speech & language testing performed by a certified Speech & Language specialist

4. Writing Samples

  • Completed Student Statement (form included in the admissions packet)
  • Completed Parent Statement (form included in the admissions packet)
5. Visit to The New High School Project 
  • After reviewing your child’s application, we will schedule an appointment for you and your child to visit the school. 

6.   Final Determination

  • Depending upon your child’s educational evaluation, we may require additional testing.  After the interview, the Admissions Committee will review your child’s records, diagnostic evaluations and observation of the student’s visitation to make a determination of suitability.  The New High School’s Dean of Student Life will inform you of the decision and, if appropriate
