Curriculum
Our curriculum is all about what works best for student learning. The day starts later so teenagers are more awake during class. Flexible blocks of time in the daily schedule allow teachers to vary the length and sequence of activities according to the needs of the students.
The curriculum focuses on skill development through project-based learning. The year is divided into six, approximately six-week project periods. Each project period focuses on an engaging question related to one major subject area—science, literature, or social studies.
Reading, writing, organizational, and study skills are taught as part of every subject. Both the arts and mathematics are incorporated into each project period.
Technology is integral to TNHSP. Students use technology as a learning tool, to gather research, and for creative expression in their portfolio projects.
Students earn 12 semester credits, as follows: 1 each in English, Mathematics, Science (physics and biology), History, Wellness and Fitness, and ½ credit each in Visual Arts and Performing Arts. Course content meets or exceeds California requirements and curriculum standards for 9th and 10th grade students and aligns with local area schools’ credit requirements.
"My favorite thing about TNHSP is that I can be accepted no matter what. I also have accommodations here, and the one-on-one teacher assistance that I need is always available. Another thing I really like about TNHSP is that we go on lots of field trips. I learn a lot from these field trips by touching and using things." -- TNHSP student
